ANSWERS
by F. San Miguel: 1. To add Ask Jeeves to your Sherlock visit
http://apple.com/sherlock/ on the Web for a listing and instructions for downloading
those plug‑ins. In general, when you find a Sherlock plug‑in you
want, download it to your Mac using Internet Explorer or an FTP program. To
install the new plug in: 1. Drag the plug in file (it's called "something
src" to the System Folder icon your iMac's Start up drive, the main hard
drive 2. Drop the plug‑in on the System Folder 3. The Finder will respond
by telling you the plug‑in needs to be put in the Internet Search Sites
folder. Click OK. You can go to your Mac Help pulldown menu and write the
question "find out how to download plug ins for your Sherlock 2". It
will give you a long list of things you need to do to customize your Sherlock
channels, but the main one is to go to the site on the web where the plug ins
reside, and drag and drop it in your the channel icon you desire to find it in
the future. 2. Under the Apple Menu go to Controls, open Keyboard Control
Panel, click Function Key Button, then select the Key Number you want to use,
i.e. F12, then go to the item either on your desk top or your hard drive that
you want to add to your hot function keys, click on it, and click the Assign
Button. This works if your computer supports hot function keys. 3. A number of
factors can cause your start up icons to get scrambled, i.e. a change in
resolution of your screen. To fix it is simple. Go to View on the Menu bar,
choose View Options and then select your preference, i.e. none, which means
your icons can get scrambled, or always snap to grid, or as arranged by name,
size, date, etc.. 4. QuickTimes Streaming is a technology that makes it
possible to view QuickTime movies as they are transferred over a network
connection. Generally, this is done over the Internet. This has many
applications. You can watch live events via a Webcast, specially useful if the
event is not broadcasted for television. If you are in to iMovies as I am, I
was able to export my 26 minutes 7 GB movie to a QuickTime format that
compressed it to 72 MB. This is still too big for a website, but it gives you
an idea of how you can compress a short take documentary lasting five minutes
into something you can download to your website or send by email to a friend.
5. If your computer has limited memory (RAM), the best way to save on memory is
to disable unnecessary extensions (using the Extensions Manager mentioned in
item 3 above). Items such as fax software (if you do not intend to fax or receive
faxes on your computer), or the Web Sharing extension which is not necessary
for most users, as well as the various printer drivers that are installed by
the system installation such as LaserWriter, ImageWriter, the various
StyleWriter printers, etc. Just the printer driver for your particular printer
is needed. I would strongly suggest that the user carefully turn on and off
extensions with the Extensions Manager. If you aren't sure which extensions are
needed, don't mess with them. Turning extensions on and off without knowing
what their fimctions are can cause serious problems. Also, it is surprising
how much you don't need that you have in your computer. Save everything that
you need into a zip disk or other saving device, Do a software restore to your
Mac and start all over again. You will be delighted with the things you can now
do. 6. MacHome or MacAddict would be my advise for beginners or intermediate
users.

The GreenDisk Company will continue to accept CD's,
diskettes and magnetic tapes. Also, they will take plastic containers for
recycling. They will process the materials on site in order to protect the
security information on the items. They will grind up all the CD's and
demagnetize all the magnetic tapes. The fee that they charge is paid to a non‑profit
organization that conducts the work for them. Remember to
bring those tapes and CD's to the December meeting!
